Our phones causes more stress and anxiety than what we expect. Although we use it in every expect of our lives, we never really look at how it negatively impacts us in our day-to-day lives. Comparing our lives to others we see on social media, trying to respond in a reasonable amount of time to messages, and even playing games all add on to the stress of our daily lives.
During my time in college, I had no choice but to utilize my phone almost every minute in each day. I had so much anxiety using apps such as groupme, my university app, email, and all social media platforms. Imagine being at a party and checking your email each time a song you don't like comes on. I spent so much time worried about missing an assignment that I couldn't always just relax.
Due to the stress of not having my laptop on me constantly, I had to download apps on my phone such as google docs, pages, and even excel. Sometimes, I would have no choice but to read a chapter online while driving to work or school! Ridiculous right?
Not to mention, I made sure I was active in my organizations. Freshman year, I decided to join about 6 organizations. Each org that I joined, had their own group chat which consisted of non stop messages. Although this was convenient, it got to the point that people were sending messages in the wee hours of the morning. My phone wasn't always sharing one side of the bed with me, but because of my roles in these organizations, I had no choice but to lay my phone in my bed.
I decided that after I graduation, I will be doing a phone detox. Starting June 1st, I will be removing all apps that doesn't add to my life in a positive manner. My goal is that after 2-4 weeks, I will not be relying on social media to kill time and I can go back to reading and writing in my leisure time.
